AID POLICY: Donors still far from transparent

When nations gather in Busan, South Korea, for the fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, transparency will be up for discussion. A study by campaign group Publish What You Fund finds that most international aid donors are still not open enough about their aid programmes, and some offer no information at all.

Tracking the Independent Review: Measuring up the Multilaterals

AusAID has moved quickly to implement the ‘Australian Multilateral Assessment’ (AMA), a process recommended by the Government’s Independent Review. This process is designed to assess multilateral institutions by ranking them against a fixed set of criteria. As part of our ‘Tracking the Aid Review’ project, AID/WATCH will be releasing alternative profiles of multilateral agencies that consider criteria that AusAID is not looking at, including ecological impact and footprint, genuine pro-poor focus and commitment to working with the poor, not merely on their behalf.

Since the last High Level Forum in Accra, more than 20,000 civil society organisations (CSOs) - including trade unions, women’s groups, youth groups, faith-based organisations and other social movements – in more than 90 countries, have been consulted on the process, agenda and expected outcomes of the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF-4) that is meeting here in Busan. We, the 500 participants at the Busan Global Civil Society Forum convened on 26-28 November, represent thousands of civil society actors and speak with one voice.

IFC launches new Pacific microfinance initiative

The International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank group, has launched a new microfinance initiative for the Pacific. The 12.3 million dollar project will provide funding to microfinance organisations in Papua New Guinea, the Pacific and East Timor. It follows shortly after the Pacific Islands Forum's first Private Sector Dialogue which highlighted the need for greater availability of microfinance.

PIANGO welcomes Forum S-G's call for partnership

Updated August 18, 2010 17:02:23 - The Pacific Islands Association of Non-government Organisations has welcomed comments by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General calling for more dialogue with civil society. In the lead-up to the Pacific Island leaders meeting in Port Vila civil society organisations were critical of the forum secretariat for failing to consult them. Earlier on Pacific Beat, Forum Secretary General, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, acknowledged the enormous grassroots skills, knowledge and staying power of civil society organisations and called on regional bodies to build a partnership with them.
