Non-Government Organisations

For many Australians, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) are the most visible representation of development assistance and a major source of information on issues related to international development. Australians give generously to NGOs. In 2006 alone, 1,408,837 members of the Australian public donated $724.94 million to Australian NGOs working in the aid and development sector. This indicates that many Australians are willing to contribute to working toward a more just world on a regular basis and take action when immediate help is needed. This then begs the question, ‘who to give to?’

What role do Non-Government Organisations play in international aid and development?

This section gives a concise explanation as to what NGOs are and their opportunities for engagement with government bodies, such as AusAID.

The section outlines several contrasting NGO approaches to development assistance, including grassroots development, humanitarian/ emergency relief, advocacy and international volunteering.
